What is the Nurtured Heart Approach (NHA)?
The Nurtured Heart Approach is more than just a parenting or behaviour management strategy. It is a philosophy for creating healthy relationships with the people in your life. The Nurtured Heart Approach will increase your awareness and understanding of relationships. Originally created by Howard Glasser in 1994, the Nurtured Heart Approach is has been successfully implemented in classrooms and through families, foster carers,
health care professionals, social workers and criminal justice
organisations.
It has received international acclaim for its success in providing
positive outcomes to a wide range of children and vulnerable adults.
Since 1994, thousands of teachers around the world have also received NHA training and have had consistent experiences not only shifting the intense child into using their great energies in constructive, creative and successful ways, but also seeing the average child flourish well beyond expectations.
The Nurtured Heart Approach is a way of thinking and a set of strategies that are particularly useful for intense children and young people, but it can also be tremendously valuable for all children. It emphasises energising crucial traits of a whole person within the structure of clear consistent boundaries. The goal is to create a wonderful new level of “inner wealth” that will inspire the child to make positive choices rather than the negative ones. The Nurtured Heart Approach provides just the right amount of balance between being positive with the child and setting limits for the child. Strong positives are used in conjunction with excellent limit setting along with a refusal to accidentally reward negativity.
